What Is CreepyPasta and Where It Began
In a generation where the horror genre is exploding, I'd like to popularize what is known as a "CreepyPasta". Telling horror stories around a camp fire has been a tradition for many years but this concept has been dying out. I believe the reason for this is because of a changing horror genre and a new generation. For instance, the hit horror movie The Exorcist was released in 1973. My parents told me that this movie use to give them nightmares so naturally I had to check it out but was thoroughly disappointed. The movie itself was good but it wasn't scary. Likewise, an urban legend I use to hear as a kid about a woman in white that haunted a mountain top in my town use to scare me senseless but when I related the story to my little sister, she didn't seem too unnerved. So what happens when the art of scary story telling is reborn on the internet? Well let me start by telling you about the word "CreepyPasta". The word is derived from the phrase "copy and paste". These are horror stories that are written that are posted, copied, and pasted around the internet. This was the phrase coined by a message board on 4chan where they had a horror story telling contest. The story that won was the legend of what is now perhaps the most iconic CreepyPasta legend, the Slender Man, in 2006 however it's also possible that the original CreepyPasta was series of blog posts that would later become known as Ted the Caver in 2001. Nobody really knows for sure. All that I do know is that CreepyPasta has exploded with popularity with the development if the Internet even going on to spawn books, movies, a cult following, and even a real life murder. The nice thing about CreepyPasta is that anyone on the Internet can write one which gives the well written ones a creative and fresh feel. There are different categories and famous authors and stories that I will post about and hopefully raise awareness of the art of CreepyPasta.
Gives me the creeps for sure! Nice work Eric!
